In recent years, content creation has become an undeniable trend. Many content creators publish articles, short videos, and other works online, with numerous foreign creators opting for the Patreon platform. However, Taiwanese creators often face challenges, especially in terms of payment processing and the high fees associated with receiving sponsorships on this American platform.

Patreon Payment Challenges:

On Patreon, creators can set levels to determine the content subscribers can access and the subscription fees. Patreon charges a fee of 5% to 12% on fan subscriptions and sponsorships. When combining other fees, creators end up with around 80% of the income after deducting platform fees. The details are explained below.

Patreon Platform Fees:

Patreon plans are divided into three levels: Lite, Pro, and Premium, with corresponding cuts of 5%, 8%, and 12%. For detailed information on platform fees and plans, you can visit the official Patreon website.

Patreon Transaction Fees:

Patreon charges transaction fees to cover various tasks such as handling recurring charges, refund retrieval, and combating fraudulent activities. The standard payment rate is 2.9% + USD 0.30 (for each transaction above USD 3), or a micro-payment rate of 5% + USD 0.10 (for each transaction of USD 3 or less). For more details, click here.

Transfer Fees + Third-Party Platform Fees:

When withdrawing funds, Taiwanese creators can use either Payoneer or PayPal as third-party payment platforms. First, Patreon charges a transfer fee based on the chosen platform. Then, the third-party platform converts USD to TWD, incurring an additional fee.

  1. Payoneer:

When the funds reach USD 25, creators can withdraw them. The fees include USD 1 (Patreon transfer fee) + 1.2% (Payoneer fee) + approximately USD 10 - 40 (intermediary bank fee) + approximately TWD 200 - 300 (bank fee).

  2. PayPal:

When the funds reach USD 10, creators can withdraw them. The fees include 1% (Patreon transfer fee) + 2.5% (PayPal fee).

With multiple fees accumulated in the process, Taiwanese creators using the Patreon platform to withdraw subscription fees from fans may experience substantial costs, ultimately receiving approximately 80% of the funds.
